Matsumoto Castle:

The Story of Japan’s Black Fortress

Discover the legacy of one of Japan’s oldest and most iconic castles — standing tall since the days of samurai and surviving through the power of the people.

1. Why is it called the “Crow Castle”?

Matsumoto Castle is often referred to as “Ujō” — the Crow Castle — because of its striking black exterior.

The dark lacquered wood was not just for aesthetics. In the Sengoku (Warring States) period, black symbolized power, intimidation, and prestige.

It made a statement: this castle was meant to be feared, and its lord respected.

2. Built on conflict: From Fukashi to Matsumoto

Before it became Matsumoto Castle, it was a small fortress called Fukashi-jō, established during the Muromachi period by the Ogasawara clan.

Through the 1500s, the region was controlled by powerful figures like Takeda Shingen, Oda Nobunaga, and Toyotomi Hideyoshi.

Under Hideyoshi, Ishikawa Kazumasa and his son Yasunaga began constructing the elegant and functional fortress we see today.

3. A rare survivor: Five stories outside, six inside

At first glance, the main keep appears five stories tall — but it hides a secret sixth floor.

This trick design confused invaders and reflects the clever engineering of the time.

Today, Matsumoto Castle is a designated National Treasure and one of the few surviving original castles in Japan.

4. Nearly destroyed — saved by the people

During the Meiji Restoration, many castles were sold or demolished. Matsumoto Castle was nearly lost, too.

But thanks to Ryozo Ichikawa, a local schoolteacher, and a group of determined citizens, it was preserved.

Their movement is remembered as one of Japan’s first civic efforts to protect cultural heritage.

5. A symbol of peace in the modern age

Once a fortress of war, now a place of serenity.

Cherry blossoms in spring, deep greens in summer, vivid autumn leaves, and soft winter snow — Matsumoto Castle stands in harmony with the seasons.

“What once stood as a fortress of fear now stands as a place of peace.”
